Conan: Natohk, the Veiled One

The next model I painted for my buddy (and myself) was Natohk from Black Colossus. Natohk is actually the resurrected form of the Stygian sorcerer Thugra Khotan, accidentally awakened by Shevatas. He's one of several evil wizards that your heroes can take on.

Once again, my model's on the left and my buddy's is on the right, if it matters to you.

I tried a new technique on the robes, painting all three layers the same shade of red. I then washed each layer with a different wash to differentiate them. From the inner to outer robe, they were shaded with Soft Body Black, Sewer Water, and Carroburg Crimson. The effect is more subtle than I would have liked, but it worked out.

I meant to leave the eyes in the mask black for extra menace, but the face just didn't pop. I fell back on the old standby of glowing red eyes and I think it really makes a difference.

Finally, in Black Colossus, Natohk throws a scorpion at Conan in their final confrontation. There are two scorpions on the model, one on the headpiece and one on his shoulder. I painted them a light tan to represent that they're live scorpions rather than ornaments. Natohk is one with the desert and commands its creatures.

  1. Really cool to see these models being painted!I like the robes, but see how it would be difficult to see the differences in the washes. You might be able to (in the future) go brighter on the reds before washing them, so the color tint is more apparent. I'd also try photographing on a darker background to get the red to pop.

  2. Thanks! Those are both good ideas. I really need to get some better backgrounds.
