Conan: Hadrathus, Priest of Asura

Hadrathus is one of the core heroes in the Conan board game, acting as your archetypal wizard. The character appears in The Hour of the Dragon, and aids Conan as he tries to regain the throne of Aquilonia. He is a high priest of the god Asura, and his church had traditionally been suspected of cannibalism and persecuted by the official state religion, the church of Mitra.

Death Company Marines

For Christmas, my wife gave me the Death Company Strike Force boxed set. From this, I managed to make a Death Company Chaplain, a Death Company Dreadnought, and 18 Death Company with jump packs. These 4 are the first batch of them that I've painted.

Spring Fling Tournament: Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, it was an Ork player that ended up with the most points. He had a biker heavy army with a Gorkanaut, but I'm afraid I don't know much about his army beyond that. It's also worth noting that the Genestealer Cult went undefeated throughout the day. That is a seriously strong list, and I look forward to playing it again and trying to figure out how to combat it.

As for my army, I definitely need to play it more if I want to be competitive at all. Even so, I realized there were a few changes I need to make to the list.

1) Since the Battle Demi-Company doesn't allow the Captain to be upgraded to a Chapter Master, I noticed that my Command squad lost a lot of its power. It absolutely needs a Chaplain's re-rolls to maximize the impact of its relatively small number of strong attacks. In addition, I don't think the Shield Eternal is worth it on a Captain. With only 3 wounds, he's easy enough to kill without Instant Death, and with T5 from the bike, relatively few things can instakill him.

2) I think 2 Devastator squads was overkill, at least at 1,500 points. I often found myself without high value targets to shoot at after the first turn. Also, the flakk missiles are very expensive and not worthwhile unless you're facing a lot of flyers (which I didn't).

3) I still enjoy having all of the Tactical squad bodies on the field. It's great for target saturation and board control. I think I'm going to switch the flamers to something with better AP. In the Sternhammer Strike Force, the re-rolls on bolters are a strong enough defense on overwatch that I can drop the flamers without much loss. Some melta or plasma would be very helpful in dealing with harder targets, especially if I'm dropping one of my Devastator squads.

Spring Fling Tournament: Game 3

My third game was against a newer Blood Angel player. If some of his models look familiar, that's okay. I lent him some of my Blood Angels so he wouldn't have to proxy for the tournament.

Blood Angels

Golden Host

5 Sanguinary Guard w/ Chapter Banner
5 Sanguinary Guard w/ Chapter Banner

Combined Arms Detachment

Sanguinary Priest w/ jump pack, Fury of Baal
Sanguinary Priest w/ jump pack

5 Tactical Marines w/ heavy flamer, Rhino
5 Tactical Marines w/ heavy flamer, Rhino

5 Death Company w/ jump packs
5 Terminators w/ heavy flamer

5 Devastators w/ missile launchers

The mission was Cloak and Shadows, using Hammer and Anvil deployment. I deployed poorly, failing to taking into account the arrival of the Golden Host. The Blood Angels deployed on the front of their deployment zone, with the Rhinos in the open, the Death Company hidden behind terrain, and the Devastators in good position in elevated cover. I got first turn.

Spring Fling Tournament: Game 2

My next game would be against a Chaos Space Marine army using the Word Bearers Grand Host detachment from Traitor Legions.

Word Bearers Grand Host

Sorcerer with jump pack

The Lost and the Damned

Dark Apostle
10 Cultists
10 Cultists
10 Cultists
10 Cultists

Favored of Chaos

Daemon Prince of Tzeentch w/ wings
8 Possessed w/ Mark of Tzeentch
8 Possessed w/ Mark of Tzeentch
7 Possessed w/ Mark of Tzeentch

The mission was the Spoils of War with Dawn of War deployment, on a table with a trench line running through the middle. We both knew that was where most of the fighting would take place.

Spring Fling Tournament: Game 1

Last weekend, we held a small "tournament" at my FLGS, with the goal of playing some lighter games of 40K with fun lists. All the games were Maelstrom missions of some sort with 1500 point armies. I took a Sternhammer Strike Force with the following:

Battle Demi-Company

Captain w/ bike, power fist, Shield Eternal, artificer armor = 205
Command squad w/ bikes, Apothecary, 4 storm shields, 2 power fists = 230
10 Tactical Marines w/ flamer, heavy bolter, Rhino w/ dozer blades = 195
10 Tactical Marines w/ flamer, heavy bolter, Rhino w/ dozer blades = 195
10 Tactical Marines w/ flamer, heavy bolter, Rhino w/ dozer blades = 195
Land Speeder w/ multi-melta, heavy flamer = 60
5 Devastator Marines w/ 4 lascannons = 150

5 Devastator Marines w/ 4 missile launchers w/ flakk = 170

Thunderfire Cannon = 100

This is pretty much the list I posted before, but I dropped some meltaguns down to flamers and switched the Land Speeder to a cheaper armament so that I could take flakk missiles on one squad of Devastators.

My first game was Cleanse and Control, where each player just has 3 Tactical Objectives all of the time. My opponent was playing his new Genestealer Cult army for the first time.

Cult Insurrection Detachment:

Brood Cycle

Cult Iconward  with the icon of the cult ascendant - 95 pts
9 x acolyte hybrids w/ cult icon, 1 w/ demo charge - 102 pts
9x acolyte hybrids w/ cult icon, 1 w/ demo charge - 102 pts
5 x acolyte hybrids - 40 pts
10 x neophyte hybrids 2 w/ mining lasers - 80 pts
10 x neophyte hybrids w/ missile launcher - 65 pts.
10 x hybrid metamorphs, 2 w/ metamorph claws - 94 pts
5 x purestrain genestealers - 70 pts

The First Curse

20x genestealers w/ scything talons - 340 pts
Patriarch- Mastery Level 2 w/ the crouchling - 135 pts

Lords of the Cult

Primus - 75 pts

Doting Throng
Magus - Mastery Level 2 - 65 pts
10 x neophyte hybrids 2 w/ siesmic canons 1 w/ grenade launcher 95 pts
10 x neophyte hybrids w/ autocanon - 60 pts
9x acolyte hybrids w/ cult icon - 82 pts

Here's our table:

Dealing with an Edition Change

In case you haven't heard, Games Workshop has pretty much confirmed that the 8th Edition of Warhammer 40,000 is around the corner. We don't know exactly when, and we know very little about the new rules, but we can make some guesses based on GW's statements and how Age of Sigmar has developed.

I've been playing 40K since the release of 3rd Edition, so I've seen a lot of edition changes. These range from very small changes like that from 3rd to 4th and 6th to 7th to more drastic changes like from 5th to 6th. The current situation with 7th Edition reminds me most of the transition of from 2nd to 3rd Edition. I didn't play 2nd Edition, but I was playing Fantasy at the time so I was keeping an eye on 40K. During 2nd Edition, 40K had moved from a small skirmish game to a battalion scale wargame. It was tied down by complicated rules from its smaller scale origin, and games took forever to play. Sound familiar?

Blood Angels Dreadnought Ettore

I've had the Black Reach Dreadnought sitting around for a while, but the requirement to take a Dreadnought in the Blood Angels Battle Demi-Company finally gave me a reason to paint him up. While a multi-melta probably isn't what I would go with if was starting from scratch, I think it'll work well once I get a Drop Pod for him.

Furioso Dreadnought Armedius: Refurbished

Here's my original Furioso Dreadnought. He's a block of metal with no real options, though I magnetized the arms for some reason, and he was one of the kits released along with the Blood Angels 3rd Edition Codex. Since this was when I started playing Blood Angels, I had to pick it up, along with the Baal Predator and the Honor Guard.

Unfortunately, time has not been great to Brother Armedius. I've become a much better painter since then, long passing my old style of painting models flat Blood Red and painting rivets in black. To make matters worse, I varnished him with a poor varnish that stayed glossy and sticky despite supposedly being matte. Eventually, I hit him with some Dullcote, but the damage had been done. There was dust stuck in the varnish and his paint had chipped in several places.

This all combined to make him worthy of a substantial refurbishing (as I comment every time I have to use his picture on the blog). That time is finally here!

Planning a 1500 Point Sternhammer List

My store is having a day of gaming, essentially a 3 round 1500 point tournament with only a cookie as a prize, where the goal is to give your opponents a good game rather than to crush them. I've agreed to lend my Blood Angels to a new player that didn't want to proxy for the tournament, so I'll be taking the Executioners. I thought about bringing Eldar, but they have too much of a stigma attached to them right now.

I decided to try a Sternhammer Detachment, as I haven't used it yet. I've been playing Blood Angels almost exclusively since before Angels of Death was released, so now seems like a good time to switch over. My goal is to make a Sternhammer that's fun to play against but won't roll over if anyone brings a tougher army, and that is similar enough to the CAD I was playing before that I'll be comfortable playing it.

Grey Knight Terminators

The Brotherhood of Luna received some reinforcements in the form of a Terminator squad. I went for all halberds except for a single daemon hammer, with a psycannon for a heavy weapon. This seemed like a decent load out for a flexible squad.

Conan the Warlord Deja Vu

Here's the last model I'm painting for my buddy. He was painted solo because I had already painted mine. I went for a more earthy, subdued color scheme with his model than the cartoonier scheme I used for mine. I actually think I like his more, so I hope he's pleased with it.

Conan: Natohk, the Veiled One

The next model I painted for my buddy (and myself) was Natohk from Black Colossus. Natohk is actually the resurrected form of the Stygian sorcerer Thugra Khotan, accidentally awakened by Shevatas. He's one of several evil wizards that your heroes can take on.

Conan: Constantius

This is the first model I'm painting for my friend, Constantius. He's the fairly despicable villain from A Witch Shall Be Born. My buddy wants to use the model to represent his D&D cleric. I figured I might as well paint my own Constantius at the same time. Mine is on the left while my friend's is on the right.

Back to Work

Wow, three weeks without any posts! I think that's the longest I've gone. I'm still pursuing my hobbies, but its taken a while to recover from having family visit for the holidays. In addition, I've been doing a bit more work on some scientific manuscripts so that's also been eating up some hobby time. As an aside, we've been introducing our son into our various geekdoms.

We've been making our own baby food, and you've got to freeze it somehow. Why use a boring ice cube tray when you can have a green pea Tardis?
