Brawler Bash: Final Thoughts

At the end of 5 tough games, I've come to a couple conclusions.

1) Air power is now paramount. Not only is anit-aircraft fire very important for keeping the rest of your army safe from flyers, but flyer-mounted firepower is much more useful than tank-mounted firepower. My Predators do a pretty good job against ground targets, but flyers get into optimal weapon range and fire arcs immediately and just blow them apart. The lower armor on flyers is a fair trade for their speed and ability to be only hit by snap shots with most weapons. On that note, the skyhammer missiles really aren't that impressive, even for their cheap cost. They've got a tough time damaging AV12, so I'll be looking to upgrade my Stormtalon to either the lascannon or typhoon.

Brawler Bash: Game 3

With a win in the last game, I was paired up against a stronger looking army. When I brought my army to the table, my opponent said, "Cool Executioners!" and asked me if I had a Thulsa Kane model. That alone really made my day, as I've never had anyone recognize the Executioners before. Not enough people have read the Badab War books.

Even though he was a very enthusiastic (and well-read) Space Marine player, my opponent was taking a break from power armor and using Daemons with Chaos Marine allies.

Bloodthirster w/ exalted reward and greater reward

Daemon Prince of Slaanesh w/ wings, power armor, 2 greater rewards

4 Flamers of Tzeentch

15 Plaguebearers

Brawler Bash: Game 2

My second game had me matched up against a Tyranid player, the same one that I was partnered with in the last team tournament. Not only that, but he'd made a great deal of progress painting his army and it looks great (he took 2nd place for army painting, and I think he'll be stiff competition for me in the future).

His army was:

Hive Tyrant w/ wings, 2 twin-linked deathspitters

3 Hive Guard

3 Zoanthropes

8 Ymgarl Genestealers

Tervigon w/ cluster spines, adrenal glands, toxin sacs

15 Termagants

16 Termagants

3 Tyranid Warriors w/ lash whips and boneswords, barbed strangler

17 Gargoyles w/ adrenal glands, toxin sacs

Mawloc

Trygon Prime

Brawler Bash: Game 1

I won't be doing in-depth battle reports for Brawler Bash. That's a daunting task for 5 games, and it's hard for me to remember the details from so many games so close together. Instead, I'll be presenting my opponent's list and an overall summary of the battle, along with a series of photos to show off interesting parts of each game.

My army was as follows:

Amra the Lion
Lysander

Amon Yara
Librarian w/ Null Zone, Gate of Infinity

Sgt. Kull
10 Tactical Marines w/ plasma gun, lascannon

Sgt. Cruacht
10 Tactical Marines w/ plasma gun, lascannon

Sgt. Balthus
5 Scouts w/ sniper rifles, missile launcher, camo cloaks

Sgt. Niord
10 Sternguard Veterans w/ 2 plasma guns, 2 combi-meltas

Sgt. Cronnacht

Brawler Bash GT: I won something!

This weekend, I attended the Brawler Bash GT. It was a 5 game, 2 day grand tournament in Durham NC, hosted by my FLGS, Atomic Empire.  This is the only 40K Grand Tournament in North Carolina, and is the first year that Brawler Bash included 40K (it's only been a Fantasy GT previously).

The tournament was really well run, and every match started and ended on time. As always, the terrain was amazing. With almost 30 40K players, and over 100 Fantasy players, this is the biggest event I've ever been to. While I am thoroughly exhausted at the end of it, I had a blast and would strongly recommend it to anyone in the area.

Space Marines in 6th Edition: Fast Attack Part 3

Space Marine Bike Squad

Bike squads are a tough, flexible choice. They’ve got better firepower than a Tactical squad with twin-linked bolters and two special weapons, though they are limited to a multi-melta or heavy bolter on a single Attack Bike (which they should always take). Bikes are a medium range firepower unit, and should use their speed to target vulnerable or high value targets. Make sure to keep them out of assault; while they are tough to kill, they won’t do any damage either. Their value is in shooting, so don’t let them get tied up unless you really need to tie up the enemy unit.

Bikers can also be taken as Troops if you take a Captain on a bike as an HQ. This gives you essentially fast Tactical squads as your Troops, which make for a fun and useful (though small) army.

Making a Purity Seal

Now that I've a display board, I wanted to label it for the Executioners. I know the common way to do this is to get a brass plate engraved. However, I priced it out from a couple places, and it costs $40 to $50 to get the amount of words I wanted engraved. I figured I could save some money by making my own label, and make it more fitting for the army to boot.

I've seen quite a few purity seals floating around the internet, so I decided to make one of them. First I needed to make a stamp for the seal. First, I found a wooden dowel of the diameter I wanted the finished seal to be. Next, I chose a symbol for the seal; I went with a skull in front of the Imperial Eagle as it fits with the Executioners and was the right scale.

Executioners Display Board

I've been thinking about making a display board for a while, but I always get distracted by painting up more models. However, the Brawler Bash GT is coming up in a couple weeks and I'm hoping to be in the running for best army. It seems to me that you need a display board to be even considered for that in a GT, so I applied my hobby to making a fitting display board.

Space Marines in 6th Edition: Fast Attack Part 2

Land Speeder Squadrons

The Land Speeder is fast and extremely flexible in armament. It can carry a typhoon missile launcher to act as a long range gun boat, take a heavy bolter and assault cannon for medium range anti-infantry, or multi-meltas or heavy flamers for close range work. Land Speeders can deal with any enemy target, but they are very fragile. While they gained a 5+ Jink save in 6th, they have only two hull points and can be glanced by almost any weapon on the battlefield.

I’ve tried some configurations of Land Speeder, and I find they generally die too easily to incidental fire. I have had some success with Typhoons since they can stay out of range of all but heavy weapons, which will usually have better targets. Still, I can’t really recommend Land Speeders at the moment. Their most expensive weapon options became cheaper in Codex: Dark Angels, which makes them much more appealing. Until Space Marine Land Speeders get the same treatment, I wouldn’t suggest putting them on the table.

Executioners Heavy Weapons

I've been having reasonably good experiences with my Executioners, I have found my Tactical squads' loadout pretty limiting. I started out with both squads having a meltagun, multi-melta, combi-melta, and power fist in 5th Edition. When 6th came out, I decided that meltaguns and power fists probably weren't the way to go, and built plasma gunners and bolter Sergeants for the squads. However, I stuck with the multi-melta.

Frankly, the multi-melta has a lot going for it. It's free, and it's terrifying to anything within range. Sure, it'll probably never get it's 2D6 armor penetration roll because no one will move a vehicle within 12" of it, but it doesn't need it. They tear through most vehicles as well as monstrous creatures and heavy infantry. Personally, I just love having more S8 AP2 shots. Being able to inflict instant death on terminator characters is a beautiful thing.

Stormtalon Gunship: The Four Winds

The Executioners make a triumphant return to my painting table! I'm particularly excited about this latest model because it adds a flyer to my army, and I'm very excited to put it on the table. I've spent too long getting bombarded by enemy flyers and it's time for me to deliver some death from the skies myself.
