New GW Paints Review

Last week, I picked up a few of the new GW paints that seemed pretty useful for me. Between my Blood Angels and Executioners, I've had the chance to try most of them out and I figured I'd put up my thoughts.

First up are the three reds suggested for Blood Angels. Mephiston Red is the replacement for Mechrite Red. It's about the same shade, but a bit more saturated and less muted than Mechrite Red. Due to this, it's a superior base for painting Blood Red over. It's a bit thinner than Mecrhite Red straight out of the pot, meaning it doesn't absolutely need to be thinned before use (though it still benefits from a little bit of added water). I don't think it covers quite as well as Mechrite Red, but it still covers better than most paints.

Executioners Razorbacks/Rhino

As promised, I've finished a few tanks for the Executioners. They're actually a bit ahead of schedule. I painted two which are magnetized to switch between Razorbacks and Rhinos. Overall, I'm happy with how they came out. The drybrushed silver base didn't come out perfectly, but there are only a few areas where it is noticeable under the glaze. The freehand and details on these all look pretty good to me, and they certainly look appropriate for carrying my Sternguard squads. I tried my hand at painting the gold vertical stripes, as seen in IA 10, on these and they look striking, though the edges aren't perfectly straight. I considered using masking tape, but I tried it and it pulled off some of the glaze and metallics.

Zombies!

During the last few weeks, I haven't had much consistent painting time. This meant I couldn't really work on anything requiring too much time and concentration (such as my Executioners and Blood Angels). This led me to grab some zombies off my shelf and give them the standard quick and dirty paint job.

The Howling Griffons

The Howling Griffons are an Ultramarine successor. The Chapter is almost continually at war and does not shy away from campaigns of attrition. They have extensive forges on their homeworld to allow quick replacement of battlefield losses. Their production capacity is so large that they can not only maintain their aggressive stance, but have access to large amounts of advanced equipment, such as Mk VIII power armor and the Land Raider Prometheus.

General Update

Hi All,

First off, I want to welcome all the new followers and thank Chris from Sippin' on Paint Water for plugging my blog recently. There has been quite a jump in followers  since he posted it Wednesday morning.

Nothing in the way of hobby progress or gaming this week. Rather than painting or playing, I've been presenting and defending my doctoral dissertation. All has gone well, and I've officially been awarded a Ph.D. in Behavioral Ecology!

Myself and my lab at my final seminar. I decided to wear Blood Angels colors for luck.
There's still a lot of work to do, but I am hoping that I'll be able to spend a bit more time on my hobby than I have in the last few months. Expect normal articles to resume next week and some Executioner tanks to appear in the near future.

Maybe I should promote myself to Epistolary Ignatius...

Product Review: MaxMini and Kromlech Bits

A while ago, I won some bits from Deep Strike Radio (great podcast it you're interested in fluff, by the way). I thought I'd write up a short review of the bits, and I've finally gotten around to it.

First off, there are the bits from Maxmini. There's the Mechanical Hammer set:

Steam Knight Helmets:

 Biohazard Helmets:

And Gothic Backpacks:

The Novamarines

The Novamarines are a second founding Ultramarines successor, and are thus very strict adherents of the Codex Astartes. They have the advantage of maintaining many pieces of equipment from their founding, including a full compliment of Terminator armor for the First Company and a large number of Dreadnoughts, as well as a supply of early patterns of Predators, Vindicators, and Whirlwinds. Finally, the Novamarines maintain strong ties with the Deathwatch, and many of their veterans have served in the Deathwatch. As such, the Novamarines should be played as a balanced marine force, but with a bias toward Terminators or Sternguard.

Product Review: Secret Weapon Weathering Powders

As you've seen if you've been following the progress on my Executioners, I picked up a couple types of weathering powder from Secret Weapon Miniatures. I've been using them to dirty up the Executioners, and I think I finally have enough experience with them to write up a bit of a review.

Thoughts on the new paint line

As I'm sure everyone knows by now, GW is redoing their paint line and expanding it. Overall, I'm pretty excited about it. This involves the expansion of both the Foundation line (now just called base paints) and the Washes, which are some of my favorite paints. The basic paint line, now called layer paints, is also supposed to get a redo, which is great as I think they don't really compare to other brands. In particular, I think P3 paints are quite a bit better in both coverage and smoothness. We'll also be getting new glazes and drybrush paints, which I'm excited to try out.

There is a downside here; with any change in formula, the paints won't quite be the same shade. For most of my armies, this won't make much of a difference. However, my Blood Angels are a very bright, unadulterated Blood Red. Any change in the shade will be very noticeable. I've tried the closest P3 color, Khador Red Base, but it's just a little too bright and just didn't work, despite being an easier paint to work with. I don't know if the new GW paint will be any closer of a match.

Bearing all that in mind, I picked up two more pots of Blood Red at the FLGS. It was all they had at the moment, but I may grab some more if they get more. I've still got big plans for my Blood Angels.

This may all be pointless if there's a new paint that matches Blood Red and is improved quality. I'm really hoping that's the case, but it never hurts to be safe.
