Executioners 1,850 point Army List

I’m happy to report that I’ve made the last of my purchases for my first planned 1,850 point Executioners list. It seems like a good time to actually post the list, explain how I expect it to work, and get some feedback and criticism.

Some Painted Cities of Death Terrain

Six years ago, I picked up the Imperial City box. It was a special deal with the release of the Cities of Death terrain and it came with a ridiculous amount of sprues. I immediately put them all together, making some really large buildings and then some smaller ruins. Partially because of the huge buildings I made, I never got around to painting any of the terrain. I've played on it fairly consistently over the years, but it was always grey plastic.

The Sons of Medusa

The Sons of Medusa are an Iron Hands successor, and share the reliance on technology and stubborn, methodical way for making war with their founding Chapter. They have a unique history among Chapters, having been exiled from the Iron Hands due to a doctrinal schism in Mechanicus teachings. The exiles became a crusading fleet-based Chapter, and were joined by the exiles from other Iron Hands successors sharing their divergent beliefs. Eventually, the exiles were found to be free of heresy and incorporated as an independent Chapter.

Assault Squad Sergius

I showed off a bit of this squad two weeks ago, when I posted 4 refurbished marines. Here are the other 6 marines, all fresh of the painting table and made from a combination of the Assault squad and Death Company boxes.

The Salamanders

I won’t be going into the history of the Salamanders or how they wage war, since they are well-covered by the Space Marine Codex. Instead, I wanted to briefly discuss their role in the Badab War.

Though their presence was requested on both sides from the earliest days of the war, the Salamanders remained neutral because they had previously fought alongside both the Astral Claws and the Fire Hawks. They entered the war as Loyalists only after Inquisitor Frain presented them with proof that the Astral Claws were corrupt. The Salamanders committed the 2nd Company, a considerable portion of their Nocturne garrison including several veteran instructors, six Venerable Dreadnoughts, and thirty Firedrakes of the 1st Company, under the command of Pellas Mir’san, Captain of the 2nd Company.

Executioners Chapter Badge Tutorial

The Executioners' Chapter Badge is not the simplest to paint, but without any decals or molded shoulder pads (come on Forgeworld!), it's the best option. Now that I have a fair amount of practice painting them, I decided to write up a tutorial about how I do it.

First, I paint a vertical line on the shoulder pad, defining the height and position of the center of the shield.

The Mantis Warriors

The Mantis Warriors are a White Scars successor that fought for the renegades during the Badab War. They are renowned to for cunning hit-and-run tactics, and they proved to be continual threat to the Loyalists throughout the Badab War. Their ambushes almost wiped out the Marines Errant contingent, and only the Raptors were able to meet the Mantis Warriors on even ground. They were eventually brought to battle and defeated by the Carcharodons, who attacked the citizens under the Mantis Warriors’ protection in order to draw out the elusive separatists.

The Executioners So Far.

There have been a few requests for a picture of all the Executioners I've painted so far. I've endeavored to do so, but the army is now too big to fit in my normal photography set-up. I just want to apologize in advance that the lighting and focus isn't what I'm used to.

Anyway, here are some shots.

Some Refurbished Assault Marines

Having finished a couple vehicles for the Executioners, I wanted to switch back to painting an infantry squad. The most obvious choice was my next Blood Angel Assault squad, so I went with that. The squad is made up of 6 brand new models and 4 models from my old Assault squads (who were removed from the squads to make room for meltaguns). My first step was to refurbish the old models to bring them up to my current standard.

The Minotaurs

As requested, here's my coverage of the Minotaurs. They're getting the most attention from Forgeworld at the moment.

The Minotaurs

The Minotaurs are a Chapter of unknown heritage, and their gene-seed has been classified as chimeric. They are believed to be part of the 21st, or cursed, founding. As such, they have a dark reputation among other Space Marines. They are a particularly brutal Chapter, and prefer to operate in large formations so they can bring overwhelming numbers against their enemies. Individually, Minotaurs are brooding and malign warriors, paranoid and untrusting of even their allies. They venerate only the Emperor and the High Lords of Terra, to whom they appear to have an unusually close connection. In particular, the High Lords use the Minotaurs to hunt down and destroy any renegade Space Marine Chapters. The Minotaurs have inflicted massive losses on the Imperial Paladins, the Doom Warriors, the Inceptors, and the Lamenters; the Ultramarines and all of their successors have denounced the Minotaurs and sworn oaths of vengeance against them. This tendency to hunt down renegade Chapters led to their involvement as Loyalists in the Badab War.
