The Raptors

The Raptors are a Raven Guard successor, and bear all the standard traits as such. They utilize secrecy, mobility, and superior intelligence to wage war, and they encourage a high degree of flexibility in their commanders. They prefer to fight at a distance, and utilize a large number of Land Speeders launch precision strikes. In addition, they use a large number of Scouts to both gather intelligence and launch covert strikes.

Chapter Master Lias Issodon

The Chapter Master of the Raptors epitomizes their way of warfare. He has the standard Chapter Master profile, though he switches the WS and BS. He carries a power weapon, bolt pistol, and special bolter, which can use Sternguard ammunition or act as a standard bolter with additional range and shots (up to four if he stays still).

In addition, Issodon replaces Combat Tactics with Stealth. This is a great rule for a shooty Space Marine force, giving them a 3+ cover save in most circumstances and granting Raptors a lot of durability. He also causes enemy reverse rolls to suffer a -1 penalty, which is handy when fighting any army build that relies on reserves. Finally, he can arrange for the ambush of an enemy unit before the battle, inflicting either D6 wounds on a squad or monstrous creature or a single glancing hit on a vehicle. While this is unlikely to remove the target from the battle, it is able to damage a pivotal enemy squad before the battle or prevent a particularly dangerous enemy tank from firing in the first turn.

This is the original Raptors color scheme, from before the Badab War and before they became specialists in jungle warfare.

  1. Im glade they changed their color scheme lol. I had a friend who played Raptors using shrike. He used to use a speeder storm and some scouts for a fast hitting strike unit, was a pretty cool army. I really liked Issodon's special abilities, ambush and the special bolter really make him stand out, and giving out stealth makes him ace.

  2. Agreed. There's never really been a jungle specialist Space Marine army, so the change really defined him. I'm also a big fan of Issodon just because a shooty Space Marine character is so unique (I'm not sure why). Not to mention, an army with Stealth would be a lot of fun to play.

  3. Ever since I read the "fire warrior" novel, where a raptor catches a tau grenade and holds it close to his face to look at it closer, I almost laugh out loud every time I see them mentioned. Seriously, that book makes them look like idiots.
